I loved working with this family of four from Florida during their visit to Nantucket at the end of last summer. It was actually the beginning of September when they were on the island, an absolutely gorgeous time to be there and to be outside. Allison and fam were dressed to perfection. While I often recommend light colored, solid clothing for summer sessions, Allison’s dress proved the exception to the rule — her gorgeous, feminine, checkered blue dress fit in perfectly at the locations we chose for this session: Old North Wharf on the edge of town, and Brant Point Lighthouse and beach.

One of many benefits to booking a Classic (60-90 minute) family session over my shorter Petite (30-minute) session is that we have time to work at two different locations. I love doing this, as there is so much beauty to work with on Nantucket! Photographing at two different locations on the island provides additional variety for your gallery, in both the colors and the setting in general. It also allows for a nice little break in the middle of your session while we move from one place to the next, and gives the kids a chance to have a snack or just reset before Part 2.

The beach is truly at its best for photos during the last 30 minutes or so of sunlight in the day, so my preference is usually to start in a location that offers a bit of shade (like Old North Wharf, another part of town, or the cottages in Sconset), and end the session at the beach. This gives us the best light to work with throughout the entirety of your session. Now, if it’s a very overcast or foggy day, my analysis changes completely, which is why I always stay in touch with my clients about the weather and let you know my recommendation for when and where we shoot based on the conditions. I also leave plenty of room in my schedule to accommodate a change in session day or time if needed in case of rain or heavy winds (the main factors that can interfere with a family session in the summer).

For Allison’s session, we lucked out with absolutely gorgeous weather to complement her absolutely gorgeous girls and their even more gorgeous personalities. What an evening.
