Winchester, MA Newborn Session | Photography by Kristen Swain
You might recognize this family from my late January post. What a joy it is to get to work with a family in the last few weeks before a new baby arrives, and see them again in short order, officially plus one. I also love that the timing of my work with this family allowed us to be outdoors for their family/maternity session and indoors for their newborn session in early March, when it’s typically way too cold and grey to be outside for photos.
Winter 2024 seems to have been the season of shifting dates for my newborn sessions. For almost every session I had on the books this winter, we ended up changing the date due to weather. Yes, with an in-home session you’re protected from the elements that might otherwise derail an outdoor session, but the sun is just as important, if not more, when we’re shooting indoors, because the amount of natural light we get inside a home can be so limited. Switching from a Friday to a Saturday for this Winchester, MA in-home newborn session paid off for us big-time. Nic and Laura’s home gets plenty of natural light, but the glow you see in many of these photos wouldn’t have been possible on an overcast day.
My favorite shots from this session are the ones we captured of mom and baby in the kitchen, in part because it’s pretty rare for a home’s kitchen to have great light AND be extremely visually appealing. I also love the way mom’s dress and long hair provided an element of softness and movement to what are otherwise very structure-heavy photographs. But honestly, I’m in love with this whole gallery, and was thrilled that we were able to use so many different spaces in Nic and Laura’s home for this session. Let me know in the comments which of the photos speak to you most.
